Sacred Valley of Peru

A Meditative Trek with Susie Harrington and Laura Tyson

May 17-28, 2012

Join us for a rare opportunity to bring the wisdom and open mind of meditation practice to a journey of trekking and travelling through the Andean highlands. This trip will include a five-day trek in the Lares valley region of the Sacred Valley- a remote area in which the Quechua people, direct descendants of the Incas, have maintained their traditional lifestyle for thousands of years- herding llamas and alpacas, growing potatoes, and weaving textiles that tell the story of their unwritten history. We will visit backcountry villages, do a half day of service, and trek, with horse support, across the incredible high-country and wildlife of the Vilcanota Range. Our trip will include a day at Machu Picchu and a day witnessing the local ethnic dances of a Pentecost festival, where indigenous people blend traditional costumes and beliefs with the Catholicism of the Spaniards.

We will support our journey, and enrich our experiences through meditation practice, reflection and group sharing. Our shared intention will be to be present to our experience, to be open and available to the people we meet and the places we visit, and use all that we experience to soften our hearts and open our minds. There will be a time each day to sit, and on many days time for a dharma offering from Susie and reflection and discussion with the group. At times, or for partial days, we will walk, sit, or explore in silence, but this will not be a traditional silent retreat.  While an established meditation practice is not required, openness and willingness to participate with the group, and a desire for spiritual exploration as a part of travel is necessary. The itinerary is scheduled to unfold at a relaxed pace, allowing plenty of time to deepen your experience through practice and personal reflection, and discussion.
